finding strange acetates

A spot for keeping track of especially cool (informative, fun) videos, photos, scans and other links about record cutting. (You can post them in other sections. Eventually they may end up here.) NOTE: Please put *Circuits, Schematics and Manuals* in the section with that name.

finding strange acetates

an interesting experience i had today so i figured i'd share it with the rest of the gang:

today during my ritual weekly vinyl digging, i ran across a half blank wilcox-gay 8" acetate and thought, what the hey - i'll pick it up and see if i can test cut on the blank side. i picked it up, made my way home and put it on the turntable to give the cut side a listen and to my surprise, it's a strange poem by a woman cut at 78 rpm. not just any poem, but a very sexual and x-rated poem considering the age of the blank. starting out with her saying something about being a stenographer and ending with her basically becoming a prostitute.

the labels are normal wilcox-gay labels but one side just says "stenographer" written in cursive. i tried looking up information about it but nothing at all came up. i'm curious of the wearabouts this may have came from and if it is a published poem or something someone recorded on their own. it surprisingly played fine with some surface noise even though it had some blemishes on its face.

i was just wondering if anyone else has found anything extremely strange or peculiar on any acetates they may have picked up? i know i'm not the only vinyl addict on this board!

just curious :)
all the best!

This sounds like a home-made bootleg of "The Stenographer" - was released on several "blue" or "UTC" labels including Kicks... that's the copy I have ;)

Hey
Today it is called porno in those days it was called Poetry in between they where called "Dirty Ditties" or "Bawdy"
I have a whole collection of them
Very popular in Britain and Australia
Things like "The Ball of Baltimore" (When your wife and my wife were doing it on the floor)
"Ben Hall" (Well my name is be Ben Hall (repeat) and I F...k you one and all, your a bunch of... and so and so)
"The pub with no beer" (And there is Nothing so funny weird and queer than to F...k with a barmaid that's got Gonorhea)
There is a whole lot of other stuff put out by Ktell and a few other labels
I think the last count was around 300 odd 12" albums in my stash and this is certainly a small number by what was put out No doubt
And let me say that there is some real bad stuff amongst that small lot of mine
Cheers

And popular in the US too, moss  Although ours were probably not as "real bad" as those pressed in the UK and down under. Hyacinth Bucket ("that's pronounced 'Bou-quet'!!!") would have fit perfectly where I grew up and I've always thought that "Apperances" was a british satire on our uppity social attitudes. When my mother heard one of my Ruth Wallis records she said it was "filthy" - pretty tame compared to the stenog (which I never played for her, BTW!). 8)
