Cost of New Neumann Cutting Gear in 1988

A spot for keeping track of especially cool (informative, fun) videos, photos, scans and other links about record cutting. (You can post them in other sections. Eventually they may end up here.) NOTE: Please put *Circuits, Schematics and Manuals* in the section with that name.

Amber Technology (formerly Rank Electronics) were the Australian distributors of Neumann products before Sennheier's acquisition of Neumann. Page 9 of their January 1988 Neumann price list is shown below.

Still going through my archive which is not sorted so more pages when I find them.

(All prices are without Sales Tax in Australian Dollars which is very close to the US dollar today. Our Sales Tax back then was 22% but we now have a Goods & Services Tax [GST] of 10% instead)

VAB 84 Vertical Amplitude Limiter 4 ch standard $ 13,350 + Sales Tax
VABB 4D Vertical Amplitude Limiter 2 ch standard for dig. delay $ 10,010
RUMS 77 Rumble Noise Meter $ 4,920
ZA 4 Cooling System $ 650
U 36 Reduction Valve for ZA 4 $ 440
ZA12/68B Microscope for Cutterhead Adjustment $ 2,570
BML Buchmann-Meyer Light $1,920

45543 DIN Test Record - Frequency / Crosstalk $ 71
45644 DIN Test Record - Rumble $71
12-5-98 NAB Test Record $ 71

Cutting Styli for SX68 and SX74

74 KMH S (Sapphire) $ 180
74 KMH R (Ruby) $ 180
60 FMH (Sapphire) $ 180

===========================
I should also point out that in 1991 I asked Amber for a quote to supply another SX74. They were very apologetic and advised that because Neumann had discontinued production of this equipment it would have to be hand made. The written quote was for over AUD $100,000-00, way above the price when it was in production. When I find the quote I will scan it!!

Hi Aussi,

Just saw this old post. FYI, In 1995 Mickey Knight of Diacoustic Labs in L.A. had for sale, what he claimed to be the last SX-74 built by the factory. He said he bought it brand new, with all the paperwork, from the estate of Stephen Temmer of Gotham Audio (The exclusive U.S. Neumann rep) who died in 92. His asking price, which he claimed to be the last factory price, was $15,000. Not sure who bought it, but I heard someone did. Allegedly someone converting back from DMM to lacquer. The last new price I remember for a 74 prior to this was, I believe still around $10,000. But that was a few years before.
