JayDC huffing Helium
[MOD note: As an experiment, we are moving JayDC's weed-inspired soliloquy to the Treehouse rather than wholesale deleting it. This is branched off from this thread:

We do fear that this gentle approach might encourage more of the same, so let's be clear: Moving forward, please aim towards being concise or risk your musings being crudely zapped.
Also, all insults, even if meant light-heartedly, will be zapped or potentially get members banned. AND....most references to Hitler are just gonna get zapped. Sorry. I've got no energy nor time to figure out whether or not they are offensive. --SE]
masters cut on a neumann seems to miss someting.. i dunno, maybe its just me, and my records..
not saying its junk or anything.. if people want it, they get it.. I just don't get it...
I want to use one for sure... it's like a Maybach, it looks dope..

Generally $300 total to cut master lacquers for a 12" releaseJayDC wrote:watever.. dat wat i was told, and it would justify the cost... don't shoot da messenger
Cost Breakdown:
2 x 14" Master Lacquers = $64
Stylus wear = $5 - 10
Reference dub (I usually use most of one side) = $6.5
Lacquer Mailing Box (used to send out cuts for plating) = $12
Shipping Charges for sending out cuts for plating = $15
Amortized Cost of Helium and tank rental = $5
Amortized Cost of various supplies = $5
Money saved to pay the tax man = $25
That leaves about $160 to cover studio overhead, initial investment in your lathe and mastering chain, electricity, part replacements, your time to do the vinyl transfer and maybe $20 in profit.
People who cut masters are not making fistfulls of dollars. We are barely making enough to keep thing working and turned on. I'm definitely not doing this for the $20 - $30 per cut that I'm profiting. I do it for the love of vinyl.
Oh yea, and that assumes everything works perfectly. If you get some dropped chip on your master that is a waste of $32 dollars. Also, if you do something stupid and mess up your stylus then you are actually paying for someone's release at that point.
Food for thought for those who do not cut professional master lacquers.

if I was remastering classics for wat ever reason, especially using like a 100% analog lyrec system, i would use a new needle every time and inspect each one under a microscope prior to cutting the master. I kinna dun care if it would take more time, shit like that is important to me..
if I was lucky to get a lyrec in my home, and I have a similar income situation i have now, I would not.. costs kill great tings..
classics from TAPE... new needle every time..
juss sayin'

tbch.. I'm not exactly sure wat changing the gas would do..
if your using noble gases: each one is a color ;]
if some how the acceleration limiter was connected to some sort of feedback from da head, it's quite possible that you could change gases to resonate different frequencies.. as long as you don't invoke the dual resonance model.. wtf am i talking about..

wikipedia wrote: There are several different reasons argon is used in particular applications:
* An inert gas is needed. In particular, argon is the cheapest alternative when nitrogen is not sufficiently inert.
* Low thermal conductivity is required.
* The electronic properties (ionization and/or the emission spectrum) are necessary.
Other noble gases would probably work as well in most of these applications, but argon is by far the cheapest. Argon is inexpensive since it is a byproduct of the production of liquid oxygen and liquid nitrogen from a cryogenic air separation unit, both of which are used on a large industrial scale. The other noble gases (except helium) are produced this way as well, but argon is the most plentiful since it has the highest concentration in the atmosphere. The bulk of argon applications arise simply because it is inert and relatively cheap.
