SOLD : Presto Type K
I have a Presto Type K lathe for sale. I can post some pics if there is any interest. I seems complete and I was told it was in operating condition when last used. It has been in a music store hidden under some equipment for a few years now. I have not and probably will not plug it in unless someone holds my hand here. Cables are in foul shape. Tweed outer cloth in very good condition. Pics later if needed. Price not known at this time. Thanks......a newbie

presto K pics
http://s142.photobucket.com/albums/r90/jerrymoore33154/presto%20K/
Here's the pics of the Presto K. I plugged this unit in and checked what I knew how to check. The amp seems to be working. I was able to get a sound from the speaker by simply placing my finger across the mic input. plus the needle would swing. The needle looks like its on the cutter(sharp diamond or glass point? )The needle on the playback is missing. The plug-in off the playback at the cabinet would make static sounds when move so this is a good sign its working. No weird sounds or smoke. I ran it for about 20 minutes. The rubber pads and mounts are in need of replacement. The turntable turns freely. This lathe is ready for restoration. If it doesn't sell I will restore it. Seems like a cool hobby!!! I really don't have a starting price and will take offers. Thanks for all interest in this unit. Hope to find it a good home.Jerry Moore... Georgia. USA

It looks like the same horseshoe head type that came with the J5.motorwolf wrote:anyone can see what cutter head model that is?
does it have 33 rpm? and are those jack inputs for line signal and microphone?
thanks
Other than the lone-letter Model designation this looks exactly like a K6. Very doubtful this runs at anything other than 78. Does that seem to be the case, Jaymo?

price on presto k
Back to the presto k.....I've had a few offers on this unit and decided to let it go for $400.00. Buyer to pay for shipping and insurance. I really don't want to send this unit out of the US because of issues I've had in the past. Payment to be made by PayPal (preferred) or Postal Money Order. or local pickup....South Atlanta GA area. NO CHECKS!!! Unit is sold AS IS. I know absolutely nothing about these cool machines. I do repair tube guitar amps etc. and I know this could be a great untouched project for someone. send me an email if interested. First offer gets it. thx

The K just arrived, and I wanted to share a couple interesting things about it. First off, the worm screw is set up for inside-out recording, making it very likely this was used by a radio station somewhere for making transcription discs.
Second, once I removed the platter I discovered one of my favorite phrases staring back at me:

This places the unit squarely between 1938 & 1940, when the patent was approved.
The playback head is an Audax - also marked "patents applied for" - which leads me to believe the cutterhead may also be Audax, but with a Presto-branded shell.
Lastly, after removing the rotten rubber from the capstan, the platter appears to spin at very nearly 33rpm, possibly a hair slower!
