Record Lathe Question:45 lathe?

Hi I was wondering if they made record lathes just for 45 rpm records? I would like to experiment with making 45 records provided I can get the blanks Thanks.

I would have to say no.
early record lathes were made in an era where there was only 78 RPM recording.
thats why you find a lot of suitcase cutters that only go 78.
after that, pro and semi pro lathes often went 33 and 78.
and when 45 RPM was introduced, it was simply an addition to the existing speeds.

I know that the Presto lathes can be adapted to go 45 instead of 33, etc.
each company had their own adaptation, but I am not sure if any company had only a 45rpm lathe.

Your best bet would be (depending on how deep you want to get into this):
-buy a suitcase cutter and modify it's speed (very very lo fi results)
-buy a semi-pro cutter (presto/rek o cut/etc)
-buy a modern dub cutter model and attach it to a Technics 1200 turntable.

I do think there was some sort of japanese consumer/toy system that cut only 45s. hmmm...

Thanks does any one know where i can get one? Also what kind of blanks is used with them.

I had seen two years ago in UK on Ebay a disc lathe portable in excellent condition only for 45 rpm. It was a MSS Recording lathe.
For blanks "nema problema" (no problem), because you can cut everything, from polycarbonate to pvc, or other.
For example I had done experiments to 45 rpm on a 12" without problem.

MSS Recording Company was a British factory that had produced portable lathes and too discs for BBC during the WWII.
You can see the video of a lathe on youtube, and on Google there are a lot of articles of these machines.

I am debating which type of lathe to get. I have a chance to buy a wilcox gay record lathe that needs the head demagnetized but it still works or I can wait and look for a smaller one the vanrock recorder but that is hard to find. Has anyone used the vanrock recorder and how did they like it thanks.

On the wilcox gay lathe I am think about buying the person says I does not record or play because the head has to be magnetized. He told me you reverse the needle to record and reverse it back to play. here is a youtube video not sure how easy it would be to repair

Make sure it can cut at 45! A lot of the earlier Wilcox Gay machines were pre-1948 and only cut 78.

That little suitcase thingy looks pretty cute!

Do keep in mind that you will have to spend money to get it to work.

They had a transcriber for recording notes which used a small disk at 16 speed years ago.

Oh, you mean a Dictation Machine.

Well, assuming you can find a model with a spindle that would let you fit a CD, and as long as you have a good embossing stylus, it should be quite possible.
