Well, assuming you can find a model with a spindle that would let you fit a CD, and as long as you have a good embossing stylus, it should be quite possible.

On a wilcox gay recordette can you modify them to record at 45 speed?

I'm not sure about the Recordette, but on my Recordio there is a way to reduce the platter speed from 78rpm down to about 38rpm.



Remove the platter and you should see the drive assembly. (I don't know if it's the same on a Recordette but it's probably pretty close) The drive shaft/capstan has a collar attached to it. Loosen the set screw and remove the collar. This should lower the speed of the platter to near 38rpm. Then, when you record onto your disc, slow down your source audio by 84.4% and it will play back at 45rpm!

Tim, this thread on a different board mentions a wilcox-gay recordette that was three speed! I don't know if that is true of the one you are buying. unfortunately nobody mentions a model number here.

You actually don't want to use a sharp needle to emboss - you'l just end up scratching a gouge through the plastic. The idea is to press a groove into the surface. If you have any old, worn-down cutting styli you can sometimes get them to emboss by flipping them around backwards. Otherwise try sanding down the point on a gramophone needle to give a softer, more rounded tip.

I'm not sure why you'd want to. If you have a 3-speed Recordette why not just restore that machine?

It's very doubtful you'd be able to find just the transmission from a specific model like that - especially one that did not go through as many model years as the earlier single- and double-speed models. This equipment, though not impossible to find, is not as common as it once was.

If it's fully restored, I've seen a Wilcox-Gay go anywhere from $200-$400.

The trouble with finding another machine the other ones are very high in price.

I bought a recordette and I found out the on off switch is stuck and won't turn. Would it be okay to take the knob off the shaft and spray a little pb blaster around the shaft and let it sit?

The on off knob is no good so I have to try to find another one to replace the switch.

I had a friend come over he looked at the recordette. He said on 1 circuit he was tracing, calls for a 2 k resister and from what he saw there was a 10 k resistor
