Supersom Mono Cutterhead

This is where record cutters raise questions about cutting, and trade wisdom and experiment results. We love Scully, Neumann, Presto, & Rek-O-Kut lathes and Wilcox-Gay Recordios (among others). We are excited by the various modern pro and semi-pro systems, too, in production and development. We use strange, extinct disc-based dictation machines. And other stuff, too.

didn't buy a motor yet. But that should be no problem.
Good news is that head seems to be working. I cleaned it inside and plugged it to a 5w tube amp. It is vibrating and i can hear sound...
More pictures of the restoration....

Hi

I am currently restoring a fairchild 523 as well. I just bought it after a flight to san fran, (thanks andy). I consider it a very capable lathe.

I am in just about the same boat as you, but I have the platter/table/original head...I am wondering about the drive system as well, if you are supposed to drive both shafts with a pulley from the same motor? Your motor is much similar to mine but the Fairchild official motor looks very nice.

Maybe we will both walk out of this with a nice functional unit! I will get some pics up very soon

Great! Congrats!
Please post pics.
As my TT motor is in excelent condition, i decided to use a new AC motor with that gearbox wich was originally made for industrial sewing machines and has a mechanical speed regulator. It is also very silent. I picked it because it has the same specs as the fairchild original (4 poles 1750rpm).

Can't wait to get this thing cutting!

So nice to see something brought back from near dead and forgotten. Really nice progress.

Wow Anderson, compliments for your "new" machine.
Beautiful design. A question, your cutting head is the Supersom, or other ? Then, is stereo your system ? I can see in your photo two meters...
And about the turntable system ?

I would figure that it is mono, probably 541 Fairchild cutter (hard to tell) from the pictures and that it has two meters one to monitor signal (cutting level - probably VU Meter) and the other meter is for the current or volts running through the heating coil for the stylus.

Thanks Rafaello!

I still have that Supersom and it is working and rewound to 8ohms. Also i bought a Presto 1D and have in my hands a Ortofon DSS601 from a friend, if it works well i will keep it.

The TT is a Supersom Transcription Turntable with a syncronous motor. very stable and very little rumble, almost not noticeable. I restored it to almost new condition. The feed motor is a 12v car wiper motor with a PWM driver. Nice and cheap :)

I have been learning a lot restoring this thing! Now i hope i will soon be able to cut music without any hassle...

cheers

Well Done

Close enough to two years, what an effort !
Hopefully the results are good
Keep at it
