Neumann VG66 Cutting Amplifiers
Not my sale but stumbled across these VG66 amps a couple weeks ago. Might be of use to some here.

Re: Neumann VG66 Cutting Amplifiers
Look at the outrageous price.
Guy here can't even get $10K for the same thing.

Re: Neumann VG66 Cutting Amplifiers
Averaging 3/4k for functional VG66, that's just from sales in the past 2 years.
When will this craziness stop

Re: Neumann VG66 Cutting Amplifiers
At that price they may as well be boat anchors - no one will buy at those crazy numbers
Re: Neumann VG66 Cutting Amplifiers
AND, they're listed as 'non-functioning' with parts missing! People are crazy...

I might low ball it see what they say. Will give us a better idea of where their head is at.

Re: Neumann VG66 Cutting Amplifiers
I tried not to go higher than 5K but I was rejected. I did leave some lithium grease incase they decide to come out

Re: Neumann VG66 Cutting Amplifiers
Hallo cutters!!! How many peple use the vg66 for everyday cutting?
Did you use with mods or original circuits?
Just courius...
I use it without hk66 and I don't
like the riaa premp for the pickup...

Re: Neumann VG66 Cutting Amplifiers
hmm. must be expensive if it says neuann.
vg66 is for museum use only.
dont buy if you want to cut serious masters.
except you want that vg66 sound.weak bass . no transparency and everyting passing 50 year old electrolytic caps. yammi!
the main power amps are a super early transistor design. with big el. caps in the output.
the whole system has lack of bass (compared to all other cutting amp around ) and it has not enough power for today's cutting needs.
then you have tons of pots to adjust operating points.quite sure they are all off and drifting all the time..
the only usable thing can be the hk66 if used as outboard gear. but even for this, there is better stuff around.
it can not be restored in an economic way.for sure everything is possible.
changing all caps. all transistors.all potis. cleaning tons of contacts.replace datacells with a reliable ...maybe a better power amp..the list is long.
so at least they give you a realistic price tag (i guess you have to expect this kind of money for a stable working system if you count all the hours. material.)
there is super cheap. nice stuff out. or do it yourself. keep it simple & straight, choose a nice power amp and cutting is fun.

Re: Neumann VG66 Cutting Amplifiers
I built my career on a VG66. I could have switched to a SAL74 or Ortofon setup. I've beat many SAL74's in shootouts. Anything that is 40-50 years old and hasn't been gone over will not work properly. The VG66 takes some care in restoration. If you read the manual it spec's frequency response from 40Hz- 15K Hz. That should be a clue about the low end. There are a lot of calibration points in a VG66 that have to be right to sound right. I haven't found them to drift much at all once set up.
In this day and age with digital recording and electronic instruments preserving transient response at all costs is not necessary or even desirable. I find a little current limiting to be helpful much more than it is hurtful. I find the HK66 to be totally useless. There is a mod to HK66 V7 that improves the frequency response but it still doesn't touch a Maselec.
These are obviously way overpriced. If anyone wants a kick ass sounding VG66 restoration send it to me.

Re: Neumann VG66 Cutting Amplifiers
I'm trying to restore my Vg66 from 4 year now, the first year after recapping and a first calibration I cutted for 1 year with caruso head or sx68, I was nice, no perfect but I had the possibility to learn.....
than I built a caruso system simple e nice sounding and in the meantime the vg66 was always on the test bench, matching fets on the feedback amp, multiturn pots in some cases, every module was tested out of the rack...still not sounding like I want...
It is neumann from the 60's it must sound like the records I loved!
..so it 's one of my challenge....
Thanks to Flo that helped me to set up and switch it on the first time and Paoul that helped me in many cases and gived to me the hope that one day our vg66 will sound like the salty one
It need a lot of time and knowledge,
I learned a lot with this restauration but like the cutting , never enought...
