Re: For Sale: Presto 6N
It's important to remember that the lathes I sell are not basement find as-is lathes. Which is why I intentionally don't personally post prices online, because it drives up the prices on broken as-is gear (which drives up my costs and then my prices) because people that don't know anything about the machines think the lathe they pulled out of grandpas' closet (that hasn't been used in 60 years) is worth that... Mine have been completely gone over, include extra feedscrews, all wiring/rubber/heads/etc have been serviced/replaced where necessary. There will be no seized parts that might break when you try to adjust them, the motor/clutch/head/etc are not going to be DOA. AND you get $450 worth of a starter pack, a ton of resources AND unlimited tech support any time you have problems. If UPS fucks it up en route, I stand behind it. I WILL get it working again or refund you.
People that buy from me aren't paying that price for the gear. They are paying that price for the piece of mind and time and money they are going to save trying to learn to fix and operate a new and foreign piece of gear where there is little easy to decipher information. It is extremely rare that I don't spend at least 25 hours per machine (and who knows how many impossible to find or specially re-machined parts) on repairs and training/tech supporting the new owner.
I've spent hundreds of thousands of dollars in trial and error and blown needles/blanks/busted gear/dead cutter heads over the last fifteen years ago on the learning curve and amassing a graveyard of cannibalized machines and parts. And I help people shortcut that learning curve and get right into cutting. Most people that have bought lathes from me are very happy for the tradeoff. And most people that DIDN'T (including me), would probably tell you that if they could time travel back to the start of their lathe journey and pay a few extra grand to get right into and not waste all the time and money, would love to do it.
I certainly have a hard time keeping machines in stock at that price. I've sold 20+ restored lathes just during the pandemic.

I agree 10000000000%. I personally purchased a 6N from Mike a few years ago and his tutelage and guidance were unparalleled. The machine worked like an absolute champ, too. (plus all of the extra accessories were a huge help) I can't overstate how satisfied I was with the purchase. He was a fantastic mentor and he's a great person and friend. I'd buy another machine from him in a heartbeat.piaptk wrote: ↑Sun Jan 24, 2021 2:53 pmIt's important to remember that the lathes I sell are not basement find as-is lathes. Same here. I picked up a 6N from Mike and it’s been nothing but an amazing lathe and experience. Above and beyond my expectations. You get what you pay for.
