What I need?
Hi.
I am a beginner in this world.
What is the essential gear to produce vinyls?
- Cutting machine
- Press
- Steam boiler
- Water Cooling Systems
- Machines to perform the matrix
...
Something more?
Where I can see or get the water and matrix machines?
Thanks in advance!

A really great rule of starting a successful business -
is you don't want to ever start one in a field as an employer until you've acquired the knowledge of how to do it as an employee first.
All the time I think about how much my neighborhood could use an all night diner - but while I consider myself a pretty darn good cook I don't know the first thing about running a restaurant. So - I keep my money in savings instead of seeing it go bye-bye in a sure to fail business venture - and stick to mastering music because that's what I have my training in.
Anyway - my suggestion is to get a job at a vinyl pressing plant first - THEN think about opening your own. It's hell during the summer as temps are sure to make you sweat - but it will be pretty eye opening.
Best regards,
Steve Berson

What do you need
Wise words Steve, May be we can have a cook off one day just for the fun of it One can certainly poach his eggs on a 12" die by just leaving the steam on for a few minutes They cook real good Seen that done before

What do I need
More Tortilas anyone? also Burritos? Seriously One needs to do a lot of home work before venturing into this rather complex demanding as well as testing industry I have said it in the past that unfortunatelly we have a situation in the music industry where people have been desensitised in so far the medium is concerned The proliferation of CD from all kinds of sources and in particular the computer industry has made that item such a throw away bit of consumerism and unfortunatelly it has taken music CD with it as well Besides we now have music hardware and software that is available so that any one can be a mixing mastering recording expert overnight or may be a bit longer do it burn a CD and go out trying to sell them It seems to me that music on Vinyl is the alternative to this for the younger generation who are finding the joy of listening a 3-4 minute single turn it over for the other side and so on Like a ritual rather than have a CD playing endlessly All of which is well and good However it also seems to me that quite a few want to do vinyl pressing themselves without finding out all it entiles It appears that some people think it is some kind of a CD burner where you can tell a bit of software to do it for you What a pitty I think and I am sure once they find out what it takes they think the same what a pitty A perfect example is this first post A bit of software that runs this forum for all the subscribers here with all or some of the answers will give you all the you need to know! So after a few exchanges of msg's you can than be an expert on the subject It is a fair indication of the people here that at least most of us do contribute to the general pool of knowldge for all comers whatever their questions may be and do try to steer them towards the right path and so we should But I would have thought that a bit of homework first with the information available on the net would suffice before people start posting in forums such as this with such broad request for such a complex subject

Simply using the "search" function on this site - or going back and spending a few hours and reading some of the older threads will get you answers to a lot of your question.
Using this cool thing called "Google" will bring up lots of resources elsewhere on the net as well.
Please understand that your inquiry is so broad that no one that is knowledgeable here would really want to spend the hour writing a comprehensive response to it. Perhaps if you break down other inquiries into smaller chunks it will get better responses.
If you want to see the equipment necessary for record pressing in person I have a list of nearly all the pressing plants in the world at http://www.totalsonic.net/vinylplants.htm
Many plants will give you a tour of their facility if you call them up in advance and ask to arrange for one.
Best regards,
Steve Berson

hi vittorio
your questions are hard for one answer.
took me months of research when I was looking into setting up a plant.
best is to find a plant closing and buy everything out.
or research every aspect.
presses with extruders
boiler
cooling tower
that is just the start!

Hello Vittorio,
Welcome to the forum. We are not rude here but it is true that if you do a search in this forum you will get most of the informaiton you need. As already mentioned, it would take more than an hour to answer your question and nobody has time for that. I believe that if I spent an hour or two answering your question, you will change your mind and I would have wasted my time. Nobody has time to waste. Do your homework and then ask as many questions as you like.
The first thing you need is a factory with a long lease because you do not want to move this machinery every year or two. How much does a factory cost to rent in your area? You need more then US $150,000 to do what you want to do - even before you press one record. What is your budget?

upstart cost
i'll pitch in with a question on this.
i'm considering adding a lathe to a mastering studio - so assume all outboard processing (analog and digital) is covered.
after much searching here, google, youtube, gearslutz, etc, i can't get any real world idea of what sort of cost range i'd be looking at to master and cut records. i see lathes going from $500 to $15000 and cutter heads and amps costing as much or more than many lathes. please excuse my thorough ignorance, but for a decent ready to roll lathe - what's a general ballpark budget i should be prepared/willing to pay?
or if that's too general or vague, what would a good working scully lathe with amp/cutter head run me?
thanks!

Hey Fair question If you wish to do this for a living and charge for your services stick to industry standards Stay with the Neumann see if it is complete make sure it runs. Hard to be specific But here is a good few points Best with an SP type console, SX 74 head or upgraded SX68, Pitch control (add on) will be a bonus expect to pay around $35-40K as above
Bare bones no console no computer just the amps and lathe working with the either head $20-25K Nothing wrong with Scully lathes however they never reached the level of sophistication the Neumanns did
There are a couple on offer right now Look under classifieds here One in France one in England The one in the UK over the top on price the one in France seems fair to a bit on the high side but than again it is only my view
Cheers
