SP10 Tone Arm Fitting...

This is where record cutters raise questions about cutting, and trade wisdom and experiment results. We love Scully, Neumann, Presto, & Rek-O-Kut lathes and Wilcox-Gay Recordios (among others). We are excited by the various modern pro and semi-pro systems, too, in production and development. We use strange, extinct disc-based dictation machines. And other stuff, too.

SP10 Tone Arm Fitting...

Hi!

I'm looking to add a tone arm to my Technics SP10 (cutting on a VR) and wanted some advice. I've seen loads of people doing it various ways, some building a frame for the SP10 to sit in with the tone arm (or using original frame), some just making a unit for the tone arm that is independent from the turntable etc. I am upgrading to a 2 VR system, so want to try and streamline it a little with tone arms on both SP10s, rather than play back from a separate turntable.

Has anyone got any advice, mainly on issues they came across that didn't work? Or if you were to do it again, what would you change etc. Any help would be amazing.

Thanks!

not exactly an answer to your question, but kinda related....I bought an sp15 and a Jelco arm to use with a VR for cutting lacquers a while ago. In the end, I gave up on it for a few reasons.... 1. without having a base with feet manufactured to fit souri's platform, there's no way to adjust, then fix the whole thing in an immovable position (both laterally and vertically (leveling)). 2. Parts are really hard to come by 3. my particular sp15 has a VERY slight anomaly in the platter - not quite level. So it has a little vertical motion. Not an issue when playing records (you can really even see it), but definitely an issue for cutting (groove goes deep/shallow, deep/shallow). 4. No way to using a leveling plate of souri's - it won't fit. So, I just kept the sp15 as a reference turntable - is sounds really good with the Jelco arm. I use normal 1200's on all the lathes, along with leveling plate/outboard motor for all 3 lathes at this point. Very stable speed-wise, very flat.

I'm using a Rega RB250 arm, mounted in a piece of 16mm ply attached to the SP. It's got a small base so you can just about get the required 222mm mounting distance (centre point of arm base to the centre of the spindle - the SP10 was really designed to use 10" or longer arms, the Rega is 9"), although I've had to raise it up with spacers to get the arm parallel with the platter. Easy enough, really.

Did you ever mount a tonearm?

I just got my SP-10MKII back from being serviced and I was going to pull my SP-15 out of rotation and look into setting up a tonearm for the SP-10.

Thanks in advance.

I'm getting a plinth made which should be ready soon, with dimensions to fit a Rega RB300. This is the one but with an added hole for the arm

Thanks man. My SP-10 literally landed on Sunday after being serviced. I'd love to get a plinth in the mix for it. Been using an SP-15 without one.

Yeah I've been fine without one, but there is always the issue of it moving a touch! Id like it a little more locked in, and of course much easier for tone arm mounting!
