Sad news for all lathers today - Al Grundy, easily the most knowledgeable man in North America on record cutting systems and the Neumann lathes in particular, and one of the main people responsible for keeping the professional record mastering systems in the USA running for the past 30 years - just passed away (from my understanding from complications from leukemia). He was 85. A true gentleman and a wealth of information - he will be missed!!!

What a tremendously sad loss. Al was such a wonderful man. Good sense of humor. Sharp as the sharpest point. I will miss my conversations with him on the phone enormously. I could never thank him enough for giving me an opportunity to cut. I will think of him fondly every time I use my lathe. Al, you will be missed!

Maybe people could send opcode66 any personal stories...or post them here for him.
I know Opcode and others here trained with Al, or interned or worked with/for him, or had him set up or repair their systems. People had ongoing personal and business relationships with him, sometimes going back decades. I think it's probably fair to say that Al was THE senior Neumann lathe man, worldwide (among many other impressive things over the course of his lifetime, of course).
I, regretfully, only talked to him briefly a couple times by phone. (Very recently, I hoped to have him build me a vacuum system.)
He was central to this community, and I know several people here are feeling it on a personal level. So I'm thinking of all of you this week. So very sorry.

Al Grundy, I would like to tell you that I have known Al since early 1950s
and we were together in AES and audio industry since then. For the last 15
years, Al asked me to repair for him all Neumann disc cutters as well as
some mono heads and parts for variable pitch drives. My experience of over
62 years in industry helped me to cope with all the problems that were
presented to me by Al. From junior engineer at Fairchild Recording
Equipment Corp. in since 1952 (home of 670 limiter and 641 Stereo
Cutting system) to VP and Gen mgr for Fairchild to VP Engineering at
Stanton Magnetics and Pickering, gave me an opportunity to design and
manufacture all sort of equipment for Audio Industry.
I am also an author of over 200 audio articles I have published in DB
magazine and author of section on Disc Recording of NEW AUDIO
CYCLOPEDIA. Now I am still running my small company (for 37 years)
Island Audio Engineering in Commack, NY, engaging of producing custom
products for ITT, Curtis Wright Corp. and others.
The reason I am telling you all this is because if there are any
technical questions of members of your group perhaps that I can be of
help answering them, now that we have lost Al, who was good at that. I
feel that disc cutting is very noble and fantastic technology that
should never die and I am willing to help it to flourish for some years
to come.
