Orotofon DS522 cutterhead questions

This is where record cutters raise questions about cutting, and trade wisdom and experiment results. We love Scully, Neumann, Presto, & Rek-O-Kut lathes and Wilcox-Gay Recordios (among others). We are excited by the various modern pro and semi-pro systems, too, in production and development. We use strange, extinct disc-based dictation machines. And other stuff, too.

Orotofon DS522 cutterhead questions

Hi,

Hope someone can please give me some advice regarding an Orotofon DS522. Many thanks in advance!

1) My first question is can someone please email me a photo of the matching connector? Also where can I source one?

2) Does anyone know the pinout? Are there any manuals schematics for this head available?

3) My third question is...what does this photo show? It looks like bad corrosion of the aluminium shaft and a decayed dust preventing gasket rubber. Is that correct???

Thanks,

Check the resistance - the drive coil should be around 8 ohms, the feedback coil 65 ohms, and the hot stylus attachment (presumably the ones on the edge) will of course be infinite if there's nothing attached.

Thanks, you were correct! Using a multimeter I checked the resistances.
The pins in the bakelite connector are for the stylus heating.
The two pins further away from the black connection are around 65 Ohms....feedback coils.
The furthers away are around 10 Ohms...I guess the cutter coil.

Many thanks

Getting to this point is still a chore- You need to think about how to remove the 2 layers of rotating plates to gain access to the armature.

Removing the collet without tool?

Dip a toothpick penetrating oil, touch tip lightly around upper edge of collet as head sits propped in upright position, wait a couple minutes, lightly pull away collet with gentle rotation.

Now you must mount stylus and be sure azimuth is correct, which I am unsure of how to precisely set/adjust.

Here is a pristine stylus for the ortofon dss d22

Thanks Powerstrip, great photos!

I didn't realise that I would need to remove the rubber to change the stylus.

I also hadn't realised that the stylus would have a square/rectangular section. I thought it would be a cylinder with 0.75mm diameter.

If I find some photos of the tool I'll let you know. I think I read the tool was similar to tweezers/forceps.

Thanks

Attention:

Look no further for ortofon DSS 522 Styli!

I convinced the people at apollo masters to cut more.

Contact Sam at apollo/transco and tell her you want a stylus for dss522, reference ortofon styli number 329 (WITHOUT SHANK)

She will ive back an estimate, and is saying they are basically ready to cut as soon as she gets some calls about it.

Also, if you need the manual to the cutterhead, PM me, through miracle work, I found the manual to the head!!
