Looking for more info on 33 rpm portable cutters

This is where record cutters raise questions about cutting, and trade wisdom and experiment results. We love Scully, Neumann, Presto, & Rek-O-Kut lathes and Wilcox-Gay Recordios (among others). We are excited by the various modern pro and semi-pro systems, too, in production and development. We use strange, extinct disc-based dictation machines. And other stuff, too.

Hey everyone. I've been unable to find / not sure a list exists on which cutters can cut in 33rpm. Preferably the beginner machines like Wilcox and the like as i'm on a budget. I believe the Wilcox 6a10 does, but still haven't found a clear answer. Have also looked into the 3 speed recordettes. Any recommendations on any other beginner machines with this capability would be great!

hey dom , for what its worth you should definitely consider going with a semi-pro unit (rek-o,presto, mono recorder).
i'm totally new to this stuff and wanted to start with something dirt cheap for a ...budget/beginner. do you want lo-fi or SUPER lo-fi ?
i ended up with a rek-o-lathe for $1500...just waiting for my cutterhead to get fixed :(

as for cutting 33rpm, i read some where you can use audio editing software to slow/speed up source music to cut desired speed 45/33/78...

maybe some body with "real knowledge" will chime in ....i'm not qualified.
i'm still riding the short bus.

good luck.

Haha, yes we will be on the short bus for a while it seems! i don't have enough electrical knowledge to buy a rek/presto currently; if there were problems internally I would be pretty out of luck. I just picked up a Wilcox-Gay, and so far am quite happy with it. They are incredibly simple machines, and has already helped me understand a lot about rudimentary cutting. It can cut 33 as well. Audacity is the program you are referring to, which does have options to transfer files easily into 78. I hope your cutterhead gets fixed Slant!
