Re: Presto 6N guidance suggestions? (piecing together)
Hi,
That looks to be an indcutor (only two leads connected. Not sure why. Does the motor rating plate show that its a 120Vac unit?

Right. It seems to be acting almosts as a filter choke. Its the standard Bodine motor 115vac as far as I can tell.

Re: Presto 6N guidance suggestions? (piecing together)
yes,
I have an old and new 6N, one has the large ball bearing,
the other has something in the TT shaft like you said.
But it also has a smaller ball bearing at the bottom too, as if the two bearings rotate on each other.
Also, I believe the transformer is for the microscope.
The older 6N I have, has a transformer to supply 6.3V to the microscope from the motor power.

Ah...That makes sense. Microscope light bulb. Rats, well I don't have the microscope. Oh well. Perhaps one day I'll get one.

This morning I am making the missing brackets from the first table based on the brackets from the second. We'll se how it goes.
While I'm at it, I plan on getting the wiring for the motors correct. So. I have two Bodine motors. Each appears to have four wires coming from it. But the fabric is so old you can't tell the color. Any ideas?
Also, I am curious of the diameter for the pully. I think one motor I have is set up with a 45 speed as the smaller diameter is bigger on one pulley than the other. Any measurements out there for these?
Thanks

Ok this might help solve the motor wiring mystery. The motor is completely disconnected at the moment. Across two of the wires I read about 22.2ohms. Across the other two wires I read about 135ohms. So one is likely reading the field and the other the arm right? Any suggestions from that? I will likely have blade crimps in there so I can swap things around a bit, but Id like to know a good place to start.

This project is ROLLING!
hey what type of head is that on the micro engineering table? Looks like a westrex but different
Good for you the collection looks intense!

Re: Presto 6N guidance suggestions? (piecing together)

Making some bracketry for the table that was missing it. Coming along ok. A few snags but I think it will work.
The head in question I believe is an Olsen head.
I also think that I have the wiring for the motor.
The resistance across lead 1 and 2 is 22ohms. The resistance across lead 3 and 4 is 130ohm.
I connect lead 1 and 3 together and those in turn to one blade of 115vac. Lead 2 goest to one side of the 3.75uf cap and lead 4 goes to the other side of the 3.75uf cap but is also connected to the other 115vac blade via the switch. Sound right? I think I have a 50 50 chance of the motor going the right direction when I do this...me thinks.

A little more bracket progress. Gotta weld the spacers in place. Probably get to that this week.

Little more progress. Welded the spacers on for the home-made bracket. Did some cutting and grinding too. I think its close enough to work.

So here's a slight update. I found some vintage push button switches to be used in place of the toggle. I read somewhere that some of the later lathes actually used a pushbutton instead.

Now the button needs to be depressed all the way for it to be on, which is a little problematic because one side pitches up when the arm is locked. But I will mess with it some to figure out the best adjustment.

Change of plans on the switch. This momentary toggle is right on the money.

That looks more like the right idea. Does it spring back to center on its own? If so, that's your baby.
Re: Presto 6N guidance suggestions? (piecing together)
Yup, it took me a bit to find switches that I liked. It seems that the switch that is an on-off-on momentary is a good option because the resting position is straight up and down. You have to make sure the momentary switch you choose is pushed far enough to close the circuit. I have done this with both tables, and I'm confident that it should work.

Ok, so I have wired up the what happened to be the second table to see if the motor would go. And it did. I have to replace the resto of the stuff that hold the lever in place.

I know, I know...not lathe related. Presto related though. Since the goal is to cut records from old equipment start to finish, I have also been working on getting the Presto reel to reel machines going. Got decent playback on this one so far. Need to get the record and erase calibrated.
