WTB - Broken cutterhead

Looking for either an SX68 or SX74 in broken condition.

OR

Looking for a broken Westrex 3D with working amps.

NOT willing to pay 10K or any other ridiculous sum of money. Reasonable prices please.

As I'm sure you are aware, this is to get me started learning how to rebuild cutterheads. So, keep that in mind. You may one day be getting service from me. So, help me out will ya?

Well - not sure if you would be interested in this at all - but I have Bob Speiden's one of a kind self built prototype for the Haeco SC-1 (Speiden worked for Haeco in the 60's and was the main designer for the SC-1) - from the info I have one of the channels coils are blown (although I haven't tested the rest), and it needs the stylus holder refastened onto it (which shouldn't be that hard) as well as the leads repaired/replaced. It uses bare jewel styli - of which I have a couple in unknown condition. It's similar to Grampian D in that it just uses motional feedback - but unlike the Grampians it is stereo. I have a number of Speiden's drawings and notes on it, along with a schematic/part list he made for a tube pre-amp for it (for which he made one and used it in his own cutting rack - unfortunately sold off to someone else) - that I would include along with the styli. It's small size and low weight make it one of the few stereo heads that would work well with overheads like Presto 8N/Fairchild 740 though. He used it on his own self built manual pitch lathe and I have a number of acetates he cut with this head and the sound is actually remarkably good on them.

$450 + shipping is asking price. You can email me at steve at totalsonic dot net if interested and I can send some pics then.

Originally I was going to get this restored myself - but Flo came out with the Caruso for which I put in an order - so right now while I like having it as a collectors item and as a possible future project I could use the cash and it would be great to see someone get it back to what it was sooner than later, considering the uniqueness and historical significance of this cutter head.

Best regards,
Steve Berson

Haeco I think is a wonderful cutter head, but isn't someone that can sell for example an Ortofon stereo broken ?

Perhaps look for a Neumann SX15 to take apart?
I am not sure how close that is to the 68/74
cutting lacquers-vms70 system

I've been thinking about this. I'm considering a couple broken SX74 heads. I'm also looking to find a U47 microphone. I think starting with a broken mic, rewinding the coil, reconnecting everything, and running signal to noise tests as well as frequency response. Once I can get the mic working as expected I can move on to a cutterhead. Likely a mono head at first. Once I get that perfect I will move on to the SX head. Hopefully I'll have one isolated by the time I'm ready. My guess is that the membrane tool we are all curious about was a re-purposed tool from their microphone division....

Not cheap. But also not as costly as a working head. About 1/3 the price of a working one.

Rebuilding a U47 won't help much, it's condenser (mylar tensioning is way different from coil winding). But maybe Electro-Voice RE55's, or RE20's, or Sennheiser MD421.
