I'd give crc or lighterfluid a try - it should remove any trace of adheisive left from the protective layer.
I've just shifted to using those diamond record player styli - It doesnt look as nice as yours as I'm just gluing them straight on to tungsten welding rod but man! What a difference! Tracking is much better and the sound seems a lot clearer!
I've been skipping turtle wax and heat (broken lamp and ran out of turtle wax) but it seems to be going as well as it was before.
