4 track preview
I don't chime in here often but back in the 70's I suggested why not lay down the preview on 2 tracks and the program on the other 2 tracks. Of course it would be second gen off the master but seems you could leader and back up the tape precisley.
I don't remember why they thought this would not work. At least it keeps it in the analog realm if thats what is wanted.

Re: 4 track preview
But doing lp's it would be a hassle dealing with the spreads.
Re: 4 track preview
I would think you'd need to sync the two tape machines (2trk playback machine and 4track record) somehow to minimize drift and keep the delay time consistent over the side.
Re: 4 track preview
Locked machines I guess. The 4trk idea was a brain fart( I have many!) years ago.

Re: 4 track preview
That would take too long to prepare and then there's the point that JJ made.
Add to that the different preview systems on different lathes that have a different delay time between preview and modulation.
Easier to just have a tape machine with two playback heads.
Doing the "spreads" (inserting spirals between songs) would not be an issue with the system you propose as it doesn't matter where the preview signal is coming from.
