Caruso swarf clearance

This is where record cutters raise questions about cutting, and trade wisdom and experiment results. We love Scully, Neumann, Presto, & Rek-O-Kut lathes and Wilcox-Gay Recordios (among others). We are excited by the various modern pro and semi-pro systems, too, in production and development. We use strange, extinct disc-based dictation machines. And other stuff, too.

Caruso swarf clearance

I am trying to work out how to remove swarf from under a Caruso head. It looks pretty tight down there!

I can see a 5mm curved recess... does the tube go there? What sort of tube is normally used? Does anyone have the dims?

Finbarr Saunders would have a field day with this post!

There should be plenty of room since you have the 7-degree back angle.
Maybe on VRs, you don't use that piece, but you're free to set the angle as needed.
The curved milling was only implemented in the first series and is essentially useless, so it must be an early version.
Removing chips from the side is completely outdated, and I can't recommend it.
Instead, use 6mm x 0.2mm inox tubes (cheap drink straws replacement 6 for 5 bucks), flattened in the first 50-60mm.
That should work perfectly fine.

happy cutting
