technics sp 15 bearing plate CNC - Vinyl Engine Account

This is where record cutters raise questions about cutting, and trade wisdom and experiment results. We love Scully, Neumann, Presto, & Rek-O-Kut lathes and Wilcox-Gay Recordios (among others). We are excited by the various modern pro and semi-pro systems, too, in production and development. We use strange, extinct disc-based dictation machines. And other stuff, too.

hey guys, i found this thread here pretty interesting, they are talking about cnc the technics sp 15 bearing plate as its a weak point of the turntable and not available

https://www.vinylengine.com/turntable_forum/viewtopic.php?t=138004

did any of you think about doing it before? would be super helpful to have a replacement for the bearing plate

unfortunately i can not sign up to vinyl engine and join the discussion or write any of the contributors - does any of you have an account and would be down to interact with them to find out if they succeeded? :)

if not that, does any of you have an idea how to do it? i have access to a cnc machine but no knowledge in how i could make the data to assemble the part

would be really cool and would much appreciate

kindly
ty

Yes, you’re right — the bearing plate is definitely a maintenance upgrade. The link shows exactly that. You just have to take it apart, pull the bearing plate out, measure it, and make it.

Can you upload a picture of the part (from your own turntable)?

hey,

right now the bearing plate is with someone who is making the 3D File so I can replicate the parts. Gonna go for two seperate ones and melt them together, the plastic part i will go for delirin and the metal one is going to be titanium maybe?

gonna document the steps here

Looks like the problem is that the thrust pad registers against the metal plate with some dowels which are part of the pad itself (similar to most Technics bearing assemblies). This will be very hard to re-create with a CNC machine because it means machining away a flat surface leaving only the tiny circular dowels in exactly the right place. In my experience, Delrin does not lend itself well to these kinds of tolerances... you often get annoying burrs which are a real pain to remove without messing up the part.

Couple of options spring to mind...

1) make some dowels pins from metal, and register them with some carefully drilled and reamed holes in the thrust pad.

2) machine a completely new plate and devise your own sytem for registering the thrust pad and holding it down. I would probably go with this option. Instead of having several register pins, you could simply create a recess for the thrust pad to sit in and make it a push-fit with a concentric point for the bearing to sit in.
