Long term struggle with suction noise, what am I doing wrong?

This is where record cutters raise questions about cutting, and trade wisdom and experiment results. We love Scully, Neumann, Presto, & Rek-O-Kut lathes and Wilcox-Gay Recordios (among others). We are excited by the various modern pro and semi-pro systems, too, in production and development. We use strange, extinct disc-based dictation machines. And other stuff, too.

Long term struggle with suction noise, what am I doing wrong?

Hi,

I have been struggling with this for a long time and still haven’t figured it out. I am able to get decent sounding stereo cuts with my setup, but the noise of the chip suction is very audible in the silent passages and in parst with lower volume. I am using powerful side channel blower with VFD to control its power and even when I set the power so low that the system is barely able to pick up the chip, the noise from the end of the nozzle is still too loud. When I cut silent groove and turn off the suction, the groove is very quiet, so this is the only problem that is blocking me from getting a real silent groove... :( The nozzle is basically a brass or aluminium pipe with diameter of 10mm, the end of the pipe is flattened so that the gap is about +-2mm. The nozzle is about 1.5-2mm above the blank and also 1,5-2mm away from the stylus.

Here is a video so you get an idea of what the nozzle looks and sounds like...
nozzle.mp4

Any help would be great...

Thanks,

Lukas.

Could you post an audio sample of that noise on the record ?

Did you test with no suction tube connected but pump on ? (to see if it's decoupled properly)
I see that you have a vacuum platter, did you try without the vacuum platter applying suction ?
Did you try with different nozzle sizes and different distance and angle from the needle and blank ?

I have the audio recorded somewhere, but I have recorded it some time ago so I'll have to find it. I'll try.. The noise is comming from the nozzle as you can see in the video, when I disconnect the nozzle from the silicon tube that goes to the chip jar it is suddenly pretty quiet. The vacuum platter makes also a bit of noise, but that bareable. I am pretty sure that the main problem is the nozzle.. I tried differnent distances, but thjere is not much range, I can go from approx 1mm to 4 mm, but it doesn't make much difference... What do you think is the ideal nozzle size/length/shape? What do you guys use?

Hey !

From watching the video I would suggest to try a much longer pipe before it meets the nozzle or a say 10m hose between the vaccum pump and the swarf jar (assuming your using one ?) that sounds mega powerful for what is needed to collect swarf, If you have access you could also test using a lower power domenstic hoover and see if that helps.

Thanks
